College is usually the first time we decorate our own living spaces. We need to buy our own furniture, big electronics, and décor. But we college students are usually short on money. This leads us to ask: what pieces of home décor should you splurge on, and what should you save on? In this article, we’ll discuss home items you should splurge on.

Statement Pieces

Statement pieces will make your home unique. For that reason, they are important, and you should splurge on them. This could apply to statement pieces for any room in your house. For example, if you want accent pillows, get high-quality ones. If you want a dining room table centerpiece, don’t get a basic one. Get a unique one! If you want a piece of art to hang on your wall, get one from a local artist! (In fact, bonus points if you get all your statement pieces from local artists and businesses.)

Seating

Seating is an important part of a home, especially because you want your guests to be comfortable. Along with your guests, you will be spending much time sitting on your couch, loveseats, and dining room chairs (or even more creative seating options like a beanbag chair or an ottoman). You need sturdy seating that will not break easily, yet is comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. Don’t settle for inexpensive seating pieces. Seating pieces are items worth splurging on since you will spend a big portion of your time sitting on those seats!

A mattress

Just like seating, you will spend a big portion of your time on your mattress. For that reason, you should splurge on your mattress. You don’t need the best name brand mattress, but you also should not get the most basic one, either. You could even spend some time at a mattress store testing out different ones. When you invest in a better mattress, you will sleep better and feel more rested. You will have more energy to get through your day as a result. A high-quality mattress is definitely a home item you should splurge on.

Bedding

When you’re lying on your bed, you are likely wrapped in your bedding. It’s also likely you are wrapped in your bedding when you’re relaxing or watching TV. Clearly, this means you will also be spending a lot of time wrapped in your bedding. Because of this, you should invest in comfortable bedding. After all, you do want to be comfortable when you go to sleep at night. (And it’s much easier to fall asleep and get rested when you’re sleeping in soft bed sheets.) For that reason, you should splurge on bedding.

A dining room table

The dining room is the heart of a house since that’s where a lot of bonding will take place. Of course, with the table being the central area of the room. A special area of the house deserves a special centerpiece, so you should not skimp on your dining room table. It’s an accent that could last for generations. You’ll want a high-quality table that will hold up through multiple Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve dinners. Instead of going for a smaller table, opt for a bigger table made with high-quality wood.

Lighting

Lighting can make or break a room. A bright room is much more pleasant, and good lighting fixtures can make it more so. If the room is dark, you don’t need to depend solely on the lighting fixtures on the ceiling of the room. Instead, you can brighten up a room with lamps. A floor-length or a tabletop lamp is the perfect way to do this. A good lighting fixture, like a chandelier, is a great way to lighten a room. For that reason, you should splurge on lighting for your house.

Rugs

A rug can make a room unique. It’s the perfect way to showcase your personal style while making the space cozier (because who doesn’t love a fluffy, cozy rug?). This is especially true because there are so many different styles, sizes, shapes, and materials that make a good rug. You’re bound to find one you like! An inexpensive rug could rip or break easily. You need a durable rug that won’t give out on you. Because of that, you should splurge on a high-quality rug. Not only will you be able to make the room your own, but it can be comfy, too.

Window treatments

Window treatments are also a big part of a room. Like rugs, an inexpensive curtain can rip easily. Instead, opt for high-quality curtains that fit your windows properly. If your windows are not the standard size, you could even choose customized window treatments. Aside from that, you could also look into blackout curtains for the bedroom to block out sunlight in the morning.

All in all, you should splurge for big, central items (like a dining room table, rug or window treatments), and for items you will spend a long time using (like a mattress or a couch). For amazing high-quality furniture, check out CORT Furniture Rental for all your furniture needs.
