Summer Cruising Destination Guide

By Lorena Roberts on June 16, 2019

As students around the country dive into summer break, they’re wondering about the best summer cruising destinations. There are plenty to choose from (of course) and you might be feeling overwhelmed with your options. However, one of the best ways to pay for and organize a summer trip with your pals is to embark on a cruise that’s all-expenses-paid and will take you to some of the most beautiful places in the world. Whether you’re dying to see Europe or sail the Caribbean, there’s a summer cruise destination for you! Here are some of the most popular destinations for college students who are interested in summer cruising:

1. Alaska

During the summer, Alaska is a popular cruise destination. Between late April and early September, Alaskan cruises are some of the most frequently booked. There’s a variety of activities to take part in if you’re going to cruise to Alaska this summer, including hiking and kayaking. There are many cruise lines that run routes to Alaska, including Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Silversea.

2. The Mediterranean

The Mediterranean is an incredibly popular choice among summer cruisers. This area of the world has some of the most desirable weather compared to other times of year. On a Mediterranean cruise, you’ll be able to experience a variety of cuisine, cultural sights, and excursions. Typically, Mediterranean cruises include pit stops in Barcelona and southern France. If you’re wanting to experience several of Europe’s top destinations in a short period of time, a Mediterranean cruise is the cruise for you this summer!

3. Scandinavia

Northern Europe is a serene place, and many people love cruising through the Baltics because of the peaceful scenes. During the months of May, June, July, and August, the Baltics are the perfect place to set sail on a summer cruise. If you’ve been dying to see some Northern Europe landscape and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Scandinavian Peninsula, this is the perfect cruise for you this summer.

4. Mexico

Oftentimes, people are afraid to cruise around Mexico because of drug-related violence, but that doesn’t mean this type of cruise won’t satisfy your itch to travel. Most cruise lines will caution guests of any possibility of violence, and you’ll obviously be with tons of people, so as long as you’re following some pretty basic travel safety guidelines, you should be okay.

Cruising around the side of Mexico typically includes stops at Cozumel and on the western Caribbean coast. With lower prices in Mexico, this can be a great choice of cruise for the summer time without completely draining your bank account.

5. The Arctic

If you don’t mind some cooler temperatures, the Arctic might be the perfect cruise destination for you and your family or friends this summer. You’ll get to experience endless sunlight and the best views of wildlife. You might have to pack your parka, but you’ll also want to pack your camera. This might not be the typical summer cruise we all envision, but what a cool experience it would be to visit a part of the world not many people get to experience!

6. Australia and New Zealand

Interested in seeing the Great Barrier Reef? Depending on how long you want to spend cruising through the Australian/New Zealand area, you can customize your cruise itinerary. The only problem is — you might not want to leave! Check out cruises that sail “down under” and start planning your summer cruise destination NOW.

7. New England/Canada

If you haven’t visited our friends up north, cruising along the coast might be your best option. Visiting Nova Scotia and Maine are some of the most beautiful sights, and summertime is the best time to experience it! You’ll want at least a week to explore the northern parts of the US and Canada.

8. California Coast

East Coast friends – this is for you! If you dream about getting to experience the west coast, take a cruise on the coast of California. You’ll get to experience everything from LA to San Francisco to wineries to CA sunsets. You’ll need at least a week to experience all California has to offer. Pack your sunscreen and your bathing suit, as you’ll be catching a lot of sun on a summer cruise out west.

If you’re planning a cruise for you and your friends or family, you have thousands of options. I recommend planning ahead as much as you can (so if you didn’t plan one for this summer, start thinking about next!). You’ll need time to save up some money and get ready for the life experience you’re about to have. A cruise is an experience that can’t be recreated any other way. Make sure you take lots of photos and have the time of your life. These are memories you won’t be able to replace. And remember, it’s not so much about the destination as it is about the people you go with — so pick your travel partners wisely!
